Back in business

Hey friends, the shop's been open again since Tuesday and I've listed these cutie patootie mermaid beads.

This one's on time out. She was a bad mermaid.

That's pretty much it for news. The only changes we're making is that now we'll do all our shipments on Mondays, unless they're very small, and then we'll just pop them in the mailbox any day. I'm going to go ahead and continue taking custom orders, but I may just be slower at them, because I'm going to work fewer hours a day. I don't think the changes will really even be noticeable to most.

Beadin' and Boozin'- Cocktail Hour Blog Hop

Hey friends, it’s time for the Cocktail Hour Blog Hop hosted by Copper Diem.

But first, a few notes:

-We will be opening back up on Tuesday after the long weekend. Unfortunately this doesn’t mean I’m well. It just means I can’t have my life on hold forever. There will be a few changes taking place to make life a little easier on me- we wont be taking custom orders and our shipping may be slightly slower and/or come without delivery confirmation. More details on Tuesday.

-I have a new personal blog which you may check on if you’re curious about my health status or just want to read more of my random rambling. It’s called Life Begins Now Damn It!

-This is our 100th post!

OK, Cocktail time!

My assigned cocktail was a Hurricane. Apparently there are two different kinds of hurricane cocktails. I went for the pretty pinky-orange one that’s traditionally served Mardi Gras in New Orleans.  It’s got rum and passion fruit syrup and lemon/lime juice.

I immediately thought of the lemon lime citrus slice carved disc beads from our Spring bead collection and I designed this necklace around them.

This is the first piece in a while where all the beads are handmade by me. I may have to restring it because the little striped beads are supposed to line up diagonally and one is pretty far out of line. Otherwise, I really like it.

I wasn’t done there. I really wanted to do something with passionflowers because, while researching this drink, I realized for the first time that passion flowers and passion fruit come from the same plant. Genius revelation, eh? I can be a little slow :P So, I made the main bracelet here with a piece made out of a vintage tin, intending to decoupage on it. Unfortunately, none of the passionflower images I could find were quite right, so I went with this other floral pattern and some floral charms.

Lastly, I had some doodlebeads made from the necklace leftovers that became a (very) asymmetrical pair of earrings.

Lastly, a group shot:

Now go hoppin'!

Checking in.

Hi friends. I'm just checking in to say that I'm still alive, although my condition doesn't seem to be in any hurry to get better. I'm still waiting to see a couple specialists to pin down what the heck is going on with me. In the meantime I'm getting lots and lots of (BORING) rest and still managing to do some jewelry making, including the 2 custom orders we had in progress when the poo hit the fan. I don't usually blog custom orders, but these are both going to friends of ours, and they've already gotten a chance to see them. So, let's look...

First we have some green Fish-In-Your-Ear earrings to go with a Celtic themed graduation outfit. This pic was taken before sealing, but they pretty much look like this, but shinier.

One fish, two fish, green fish...other green fish.

Next, a bangle set in some custom colors. Purple, teal, and some pinks and blues.

This isn't the whole batch. Here are some closer looks, in unfortunately cruddy quality photo form...

amethysts, yarn-wrapped, glass beads

dyed shells, vintage fabric wrapped, glass beads

glass beads with a couple vintage beads, tiny seed beads wrapped to the bangle with some polymer beads by me, embroidery floss wrapped

rhinestones and floss-wrapping

That's all I got for now. Still figuring how we're going to get the shop back up and running. We'll keep ya posted.

Further explanation of the shut down.

Hi friends, I'm blogging from bed after a day in the hospital yesterday. Kinda drugged up, so please forgive any typos.

I'm not sure what exactly happened. I had just got home from the post office (all shipments are up to date, no worries on that.) and I just started going blind. I thought I was having a brain aneurism. I called an ambulance and the rest of the day is sort of a blur, but it looks like I had a seizure of some sort- possibly caused by quitting a 15-year smoking habit, of all things. Ya try to do something good for yourself and ya land in the hospital. Pfff.

Anyhow, I texted Kim from the ER and had her shut down the shop. Thank goodness we're a 2-person shop! We'll be on vacation mode for a while until I'm certain I can depend on my health enough to know I can run the shop smoothly.

We do have 2 custom orders left in progress. Dani and Heather, I haven't forgotten about ya! I understand it might be creepy to see a shop you're waiting for an order from suddenly shut down, but I promise you'll both get your goods one way or another. I will contact you each soon.

Thanks in advance for the understanding, and I'll do my best to keep in touch as best i can during my downtime.

XOXO,
Jenna

Button Swap Blog Hop Time!

It's finally Button Swap Blog Hop time! But first I have to say Happy Mother's Day to all the Mamas!

We're celebrating with a sale in the shop. Today's the last day to take advantage of 15% off everything in the shop with the coupon code "MAMAMIA".

Now...BUTTON TIME.

New button hoarder!
Cindy Wimmer of Sweet Bead Studio assigned the partners for this swap and paired me up with Kristi Harrison of Keepsakes by Kristi. I hadn't previously seen her work, so it was extra fun making a new friend during this challenge.

I had a difficult time choosing buttons to send to Kristi, so I enlisted the help of my youngest niece, and inadvertently started a button obsession in her. She has since started her own button collection, which is about 75% buttons she snagged from my collection, but that's OK....it gives me good justification for buying more.

Here are the buttons I sent to Kristi. I made the 2 celestial-themed ones. The big sun-face was my first attempt at a shank button, so I'll be interested to see how it held up for Kristi.

And here's what Kristi sent me; vintage lovelies, a handmade ceramic button made by Spirited Earth, and a lovely mother-of-pearl button.

Initially I pulled out tons of beads to correspond with the color palette Kristi had set up for me, but then I ended up using none of them and opting for fabric and fibers instead. I made this trio of wrapped bangles with the buttons as interlocking focals.

I accidentally broke the shank off the light blue button and had to drill a hole in it. That worked out pretty well, actually.

I thought I was done there, but later I found a home for that sweet little fabric button as the clasp for this necklace, which has another button from my collection as the focal.

The mother-of-pearl button still has yet to be used, but I'm sure it will be the perfect thing for some future project.
